No ambulance available for Ashcroft man who died from apparent heart attack

August 15, 2022

An Ashcroft, BC, resident has died within a half-block of the town’s BC Ambulance Service station after an ambulance took nearly a half-hour to reach him. He has been identified by family as Jerry Spooner. It is the second time in less than a month that an Ashcroft resident in severe medical distress has had to wait nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance, despite the community having a 24/7 Alpha ambulance station.

In both cases, the patients died in the town about 45 minutes southwest of Kamloops.

Ashcroft Fire Rescue received a call from Kamloops Fire Dispatch at 8:42 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, advising that a man had suffered an apparent heart attack and that the nearest ambulance was in Clinton and would take 35 minutes to arrive. Fire Chief Josh White took the call, advised that the fire department is a volunteer one and that members are not trained as medical first responders. However, as he has a level 1 first-aid ticket, he said he would attend.

After grabbing the automated external defibrillator (AED) and gloves from the fire hall, White arrived on site at 8:58 a.m., closely followed by three other firefighters who arrived in personal vehicles. “The AED indicated no pulse and never called for a shock,” White said. “However, it was evident he had only recently gone down when we arrived and I couldn’t say if he was dead or alive at that point.”

A neighbour produced security cam footage that showed Spooler walking his dog in an alleyway off Elm Street, directly across from the ambulance station. The footage shows him collapsing at 8:21 a.m. White said firefighters and a neighbour performed CPR until the ambulance arrived at 9:11 a.m. “Ambulance paramedics got their equipment going and did all they could do, but after a little while, they called it,” he said.

White also attended the scene on July 17, when an Ashcroft woman who had gone into cardiac arrest had to wait for an ambulance to arrive. That incident happened less than 200 metres from where the Aug. 14 incident took place. That woman died. “We were half-a-block from the ambulance station,” White said. “We could see it from where we were. Something’s not right. That’s another person we’ve lost in our community.”

Gilbert Squires, 64

August 12, 2022

St. Philip’s – It is with profound sadness that the family of Gilbert “Gee” Squires announce his peaceful, sudden passing on Monday, August 8th 2022 in his hometown of St. Philip’s, at the age of 64 years. Mastering his most recently acquired hobby of canning preserves, Gee loved his garden and had “the biggest rhubarb patch in all of Newfoundland”. He absolutely hated over-priced produce “grown with a bunch of ol’ chemicals”, but he positively adored his 3 children, so each year he grew giant gardens of organic fruits and veggies so they “would never have to eat that ol’ garbage”.

To relax, Gee preferred smoking and shenanigans over meditation. He especially loved to come home from the oilrig and sit in the passenger seat of his truck, drinking a beer while you drove him around to “see who’s down around the beach”, playing him “the hardest music ya got!” Gee was the man you called when you had car troubles, relationship troubles, weed and pest troubles, and he also knew a thing or two about legal troubles. He always answered. Gee will be forever remembered for his contagious smile, beaming brown eyes, generosity, inappropriate sense of humor, and growing heads of cabbage bigger than you. He is deeply missed. Godspeed.
