The battle between Chicago Police and Mayor Lori Lightfoot continued today as the City of Chicago filed a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against Chicago Police Union boss, John Catanzara, to silence him from speaking publicly and encouraging officers to not comply with the city’s mandate to file their COVID-19 vaccination status online through a portal they have setup.
However, in a temporary victory for the police, it was announced that the city would not be sending anyone home due to their failure to report their vaccination status, and that all police officers working this weekend would be paid.
This averted a situation where Catanzara stated that less than 50% of the force would be on the streets this weekend if the department sent home the officers without pay for defying the Mayor. Here is the report from CBS 2 Chicago.
We reported yesterday that Chicago Police had until today to file their vaccination status, or be put in a “no pay” status.
Catanzara encouraged all police officers to resist filing at the portal, due to concerns about privacy and how the city might use this medical information of police officers. In his YouTube address, he made it very clear that police officers were to report to work this morning, and to only go home if their supervisors told them to do so. See:

Earlier today, Catanzara put out another video restating the Union’s position, and again discouraging officers from registering their vaccination status at the portal, stating that commanders who pressured them to do so did not have the authority to make them comply with the city’s mandate which he claims is also unlawful.
In his video earlier today, Catanzara made it clear why the portal the city has provided to register one’s vaccination status is illegal.
The portal says you’re vaccinated, provide proof or no. Those were the only two options.
We asked that there is a third option. The third option is it’s none of your damn business. I will get tested instead.
Testing should be for everybody. It shouldn’t be for vaccinated or unvaccinated.
Vaccinated can spread this virus no differently than an unvaccinated person.

After a Cook County Judge heard the City’s request for a Temporary Injunction to gag Catanzara, Catanzara made a short 50 second video where he announced the results of the Judge’s decision on the TRO, and then he made a surprise announcement:
By publicly announcing that he is running for the office of Mayor of the City of Chicago, Catanzara is quite clearly putting further pressure on the City and the Judges serving in Cook County for their attempts to gag him, as now other laws kick in that protect freedom of speech for candidates running for public office.
Catanzara stated that the judge would hear the whole motion on Monday, but the CBS report we published above states that this hearing is now pushed back until October 25th, reportedly because “there is no public safety emergency right now,” which means the City has agreed to let the officers work with pay without yet declaring their vaccination status.
So the City may have silenced Catanzara for now, but it appears that Round 1 goes to the Chicago Police, who get to still work with pay without having to declare their vaccination status, at least until October 25th.
